Starting from the text of "Gli occhiali d'oro" by Giorgio Bassani, we want to research the
marginalisation and the perception of an outsider like doctor Athos Fadigati, a jewish
homosexual man living in Ferrara during the Italian Fascist regime. This character is first
described as a respectable professional but already at the end of the second chapter rumours
start spreading:
"Non lo sai? Mi risulta che il dottor Fadigati è…" [...] "Ebbene, ho
sentito dire che è…"
From that moment on, society's perception of the doctor
dramatically changes.
"Changing lenses" allows to read and study Bassani's "Gli occhiali d'oro" from multiple perspectives. The fil rouge of all these different approaches of is to capture all the strategies of homophobic (and also ratial) marginalisation and discrimination suffered by the protagonist and the narrator during the Fascist regime.
